Photo Exhibition "TSUNAMI" in Vienna-1

Have you heard of a project called "Tears of The Earth" by the photographer and multimedia artist Satoshi Ueda, who was born in Rikuzen Takada?  Through this project he has opened his exhibit, called "TSUNAMI: a Photo Exhibition for the Recovery of the Tohoku" in Japan and abroad.  He sends the donations and messages it generates to Rikuzen-Takata.

I am making plans and preparations to open this exhibit in Vienna, but have never worked on this type of project before and nothing is going smoothly.  Fortunately, I have received permission to hold the exhibit at the University of Vienna, where I work as a lecturer.  The exhibit will be held on the university's AAKH campus and will run for 5 days from November 28th to December 2nd.

The location for the exhibit is a modern building containing two large lecture rooms, which will allow hundreds of students to view the exhibit daily.  However, this requires someone to be present constantly for security purposes (the exhibit uses computers and DVD players) during all the 10-14 hours the exhibit is open each day.  It will be a lot of work, but I am looking forward to a successful exhibit.  I am also planning to present the "SAVE TAKATA" project as well.

Concert solidalité pour Japon

                     Musiciens**
                Clarinette : Yuka, Sakiko
        Département musique ancienne
Flûte à bec : Isaura, Sarah, Théo, Florian et Guillaume
Haubois baroque : Cécile et Angélique
                Violoncelle baroque : Antoine

+++++++++

from the association POLYPHONIA in Orsay (France, near from Paris), association of the students, parents and friends of the Music School of the Vallée de Chevreuse. We helped Tomoko HIRADE, Japanese student at the Dept of Ancient Music of the school, organizing a local concert in June to support your association SAVE TAKATA and so, at our very modest level, express our solidarity with the Japanese People.

We collected 1122 euros at that concert full of emotion (during which Tomoko shared with us a little bit of your marvelous culture and traditions).

元ALT招待プログラム その後 / Invitation program for former ALTs coming to Takata: now

Hello,

About the support project for ex-ALTs visiting Rikuzentakata I introduced a few weeks ago, after that I figured out that none of participants for this program is coming to Rikuzentakata.
It seems applicants were so many just a few of them was chosen.

But still, former ALTs who used to living in Rikuzentakata have strong intentions to visit there.
We are now thinking anew about what SAVE TAKATA can do for them.

We will keep you posted of updates of this project. Thank you!

SAVE TAKATA
Hi, I'm Hitomi, manager of the Multilingual Support Team and International Outreach Team of SAVE TAKATA project.

Recently I've found an article via Facebook friend:
http://jetaabc.ca/Main/InvitationProgrammeToVisitDisasterStrickenAreas

It’s about a program designed by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Japan Tourism Agency to invite former ALTs who used to work in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, to visit the areas where they once lived that have been affected by the March 11th disaster.

Although the program will pay the travel, lodging and incidental expenses of the participants, it expects them to take care of themselves while staying in their former communities.
So we at SAVETAKATA have decided to take on that role as a project of the International Outreach Team, to provide the support that attendees will need during their stay in the area.

We will report all about this project and provide report updates written by the attendees on this blog.

From the stories I’ve already heard by some former ALTs, I have gotten a strong sense how deeply they are missing the beautiful places in Rikuzentakata lost by the tsunami, how tough it is for them to lose their friends who lived there, and how strongly they care about the disaster areas even if they are living in countries far away.

Even if they are desperately wishing to come to Japan and visit the town where they used to live, there are likely problems such as a language barrier that makes it even more difficult for them to get information and contact the appropriate people. With the current situation we have made it the duty of our International Outreach Team to help and support people from other countries who wish to help Rikuzentakata.

Ideally, this project would be better if it could be expanded to cover not only Rikuzentakata but all cities in disaster area by collaborating with other NPOs to assist us. But we’ve had to give up on the idea since we do not have enough time to prepare all that is needed before the program starts (from July to September this year).

This project is currently only to help those on the existing government program, but after it ends we hope to develop a larger project which will encourage more people overseas get interested in support for the reconstruction of northeast Japan, and show that borders between countries don’t really matter in times of need like this.

Our team is just getting underway, but we thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Presentation in Linz, Austria

Hallo! My name is Yuka. I am a Japanese teacher at the University Vienna and a member of International Outreach Team of SAVE TAKATA.
On June 20th, I made a presentation in Linz, the third-largest city in Austria which is located 190km west of Vienna.

My friend Judith, a journalist specializing in Japanese society and culture, published a book about contemporary Japan in March and she was invited to Linz for a lecture and a presentation of the book. And she gave me the opportunity to introduce our projects after her presentation.

講演の主催者はKepler Salon(ケプラー・サロン)。
The lecture was organised by Kepler Salon. I´ve been living for a long time in Europe, but I´ve never been to a "salon". Kepler Salon is a culture salon in combination with a publisher, and invites people of culture once or twice a week and organises lectures and discussions.

The salon located in a historical building in the old town of Linz. A red-white flag at the entrance indicates that it is a cultural heritage object: Johannes Kepler, the famous German astronomer lived in this building in the early 17th century.

When we arrived 30 minutes before the start of lecture, already about 20 persons, who looked like regular customers were there, reading newspapers or talking, drinking wine or mineral water.

Behind the audience seats was a video camera. I learned for the first time that the lecture would be recorded for internet TV named "Bildungs TV" for teachers of high schools.

The lecture started at 19:00. After the host had introduced us, Judith gave her presentation about contemporary Japan, read parts of her book and answered questions of audience. Thereafter I had about 10 minutes to introduce Rikuzentakata and SAVE TAKATA. Hardly anybody in the audience knew where Rikuzentakata is located. No wonder, even I myself din´t know Takata until I went there in 2003 for camping with my cousins living in Miyagi and Iwate.
I tried to explain that tsunami on March 11 destroyed the city of Takata completely, described the current situation and gave an outline of what SAVE TAKATA did so far to support the victims and what it plans to do in the future.

There were about 50 participants in the audience and I had the impression that most of them were listening carefully to my presentation. But as soon as the host marked the end of lecture at 20:45, almost all people went home immediately like an ebbing tide.
Wait a moment! I wanted to give you a flyer and ask for a donation.

I wasn´t able to distribute flyers before the lecture, because I wasn´t the main lecturer. And I thought I shouldn´t show the donation box with the logo of SAVE TAKATA during the presentations, but now it was to late. Result: No flyers distributed, no donations collected. But nobody came to Judith to discuss with her or to buy her book either. We were staggered.

When I raised money for the victims of disaster in Japan in March and April in Vienna together with my co-workers and students (in combination with Austrian Red Cross), many people donated much money. But the situation is changing and we have to devise new/different ways of asking for donations in foreign countries.
So I was not able to collect much money on that day, but at least I learned something.
